In one of the most iconic locations in the Netherlands—The Koelwaterhal, where water once purified to cool turbines now inspires a new generation through art and culture—a unique event is set to unfold. This historic venue, with its impressive architecture and vast cellars, stands as a silent witness to an era of industrial ingenuity. On the 3rd of October, it will bear witness to an event that merges history with the present, as we celebrate the rich cultural connections between China and the Netherlands.
We invite you to join us at The Koelwaterhal in Zwolle for a momentous occasion—the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China with the featured exhibition by Ronald Westerhuis. This event is a collaborative effort by the Netherlands China Association and the Netherlands China Business Council, bringing together Dutch and Chinese professionals for an unforgettable evening of art, culture, and networking. Be welcome!
Curated by world-renowned artist Ronald Westerhuis and Chinese artists, the exposition will feature art exhibits as ‘A visual journey through ancient Chinese characters’ and ‘Ceramic Canvases’. The artworks celebrate the deep cultural ties between China and the Netherlands, blending ancient heritage with contemporary artistic practices.
We will then give the floor to two special speakers:
- Rob Berkel, author of Chinese Schetsen, will take us back to the historic moment when Mao Zedong proclaimed the People’s Republic on October 1, 1949. His presentation will feature unique photo and film material, offering a vivid glimpse into this pivotal moment in history.
- Dr. Carwyn Morris, Assistant Professor of Digital China at Leiden University, will provide an engaging look into the digital social life of modern China. Through examples and images, he will explore the latest trends and what’s currently “hot” on the Chinese internet.
Finally, We hope to raise a glass together with His Excellency Tan Jian, the ambassador of China, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic. The evening will continue with drinks, snacks, and surprising entertainment, offering ample opportunities to connect with new and familiar faces.
