Journalism in China from the perspective of Sjoerd den Daas

Last Friday we had the pleasure of listening to Sjoerd den Daas, a seasoned NOS journalist who has been reporting from Beijing for over almost a decade.

His journey has been remarkable, navigating the complexities of a rapidly changing environment, providing stories that offered insight and clarity from a super power, rich in culture, history and innovation. His reports have not only informed us, but have also built bridges of understanding between cultures. In a region where the media environment is increasingly challenging, he has navigated obstacles with integrity and perseverance. Sjoerd’s reporting has always been characterized by its depth, humanity, and nuance. He brought voices to the surface that might otherwise have gone unheard, and in doing so, he reminded us of the power of storytelling to connect us across cultures. He has been on the frontlines, capturing stories that reflect both the rich tapestry and the intricate realities of life in China. From the bustling streets of Beijing to the rural landscapes that few outsiders ever see, Sjoerd has told stories that matter.

Soon, as he embarks on a new chapter, Sjoerd will be moving to the United States, where he will continue to bring his insightful perspective to the Dutch audience. This time as a reporter based in Washington DC. His expertise, curiosity, and commitment will no doubt make this next step another success ! Thank you for bringing China a little closer to all of us, Sjoerd. We wish you all the best in your next, – completely different- but equally challenging posting, and look forward to seeing where the next journey takes you.
